Canada Summer Jobs 2017 now accepting applications from employers
To get a greater number of Canadian youth working next summer during Canada’s 150th anniversary year, all not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers, and small businesses with up to 50 employees can now apply for funding from the Government of Canada.
The Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program creates summer job opportunities and valuable work experience for full-time students aged 15 to 30 years old.
In St. Catharines, the priorities focus on Niagara Wine Festival, Niagara Folk Arts Festival, organizations that focus on fighting poverty, organizations that focus on mental health, organizations that focus on the LGBTQ community, and organizations that focus on climate change, but all eligible applicants are encouraged to apply. Employers are also invited to include applications that complement this year’s identified national priorities, which include:
- employers involved in the welcome and settlement of immigrants (including Syrian refugees) in Canada;
- employers that hire Indigenous people;
- opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Information, and Communications Technology (ICT);
- employers involved in activities celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation; and
- small businesses, in recognition of their contribution to the creation of new jobs.
The application period runs until January 20, 2017. Applicants approved for funding will be able to hire students as early as April 2017.

- Not-for-profit employers can receive up to 100 percent of the provincial/territorial minimum hourly wage and mandatory employment-related costs.
- Public-sector employers and small businesses with up to 50 employees can receive up to 50 percent of the provincial/territorial minimum hourly wage.
- Canada Summer Jobs has helped provide more than 400,000 student jobs since its inception.
